WAR - STEEPLECHASE
QUARTER FINALS 2ND PLACE 26" DIVISION
War is my
young Border Collie and a half brother to Lochlan. He is very high
drive and wants to run at full speed all the time. My goal for War
this World Games was to run him as clean as possible. Being just a 3
year old, I was reluctant to push him for speed and therefore handling him
from behind was my plan; unlike my usual in front style. I'm not the
best rear crosser, but I knew if I ran in front of him, that would
kick up his drive so I decided to take a more conservative approach.
I even rear crossed the A-Frame which my students know I almost never do.
After the rear cross, I held War in a stand position before I cued him
forward. War ran the Steeplechase quarter finals beautifully and
wound up taking second place overall missing first place by a fraction of
a second.
WAR TEAM GAMBLERS 26"
Division
In any Gamblers run, the object
of the game is to rack up as many points in a specified about of time by
doing obstacles that have been assigned different point values. This
this Gamble the weave poles were allotted the most points and then the
Contact equipment was the second highest point value. You can
only do each obstacle twice for points and then you have to move on to
another obstacle. Then you horn will blow and you then have to go
into the closing sequence. This course was a Time Gamble as opposed
to a Distance Challenge Gamble which means you have to go into the closing
section and complete as many obstacles as you can before the the buzzer
goes off. If you don't get over the finish jump in time, you lose
all your closing points.
WAR STEEPLECHASE
SEMI-FINALS 26" DIVISION
With the good runs, there are
the bad runs too. These are the runs that you learn from the most
and without them, you wouldn't progress very far in the sport. This
is a semi-final which is load of pressure for me, but this wasn't what
ended our run. I tried to handle War conservatively just to get the
run done, but after coming off the A-frame, we collided. War knocked
my knee and I fell. Right there my hopes of making the finals were
done. What I tell my students about falling is that everyone falls
at one time or another. Even the very best handlers will fall.
All you can do is get up and keep going. I have fallen my share of
runs for one reason or another and I don't let it bother me. As long
as I can fall with some grace and not hurt myself or my dog, that's all I
care about. So don't feel bad about yourself if you fall, it's going
to happen sooner or later..
